Professional writers and motivational speakers aren’t the only ones with meaningful, hopeful, or inspiring stories to share.

God wired us for story. It’s how we came to know him, through the stories in the Bible, and to know his son. Stories are also how God asks us to share our faith.

Unfortunately, many Christians — whether or not they are writers, speakers, authors, and leaders — get stuck on how or where to start their stories.

Some devalue their story or say they don't have a story, even though their seemingly "small" story may reveal a big truth about who God is or how God loves us.

I taught a faith storytelling class at my church and realized that too many people who wanted to share their story were stuck. They needed a different way to think about how to work with their natural writing or speaking style.

It’s why I developed the Storytelling Style Quiz: To help you realize understand if you are a Story Builder or Story Carver, and to offer tips and strategies.

📚 Story Builders 📚

Story Builders start with a blank page or a few sentences. They construct their story from the ground up, piece by piece. Unfortunately, many Story Builders doubt themselves or their story as worthy, even though we know all faith stories can honor God! At Faith Storytellers, it’s our believe that everyone has a story to share!

Story Builders approach a story as a sculptor would approach clay: Adding to it in layers, first in big pieces and then in smaller and smaller pieces as they refine their story. Story Builders can take a similar approach to writing a book, speech, testimonial, or story.

📚 Story Carvers 📚

Story Carvers start with a mountain of material and have to carve chunks away. Many Story Carvers have journals, notes, research, photographs, and more to pull from, which can feel overwhelming. Many are unsure how to develop a main point, or Story Anchor, to focus their story. Story Carvers understand their story can benefit many people, and at the same time they feel their story is a burden.

Story Carvers approach a story as a sculptor would approach wood or stone: They whittle it away. First in large chunks, then smaller and smaller chunks as they refine their story to have a clear beginning, middle with change, and resolution.
