Christian writers quiz: What’s my storytelling style?

While teaching a Christian writers class at her church, author Mackenzie Ryan Walters saw many writers doubt their storytelling abilities.

Many writers said:
I don’t know where to start my story.”
Other Christian writers said:

I don’t have a story,

Mackenzie realized they may not see their God-given storytelling strengths. So she developed a quiz to help.

No shame

No judgement

Your story is a gift that’s meant to be shared. And God wants you to share it with others. As it says in Psalms 107:2 (NIV):

“Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story.”

If you want to write your Christian testimony or personal story, but you’re not sure what to do next, our quiz is the best place to start. You’ll identify your God-given storytelling strengths.

God wired us for story. All of us came to know God through a story. Maybe it was a Bible story, or a Christian testimony shared by our parents or grandparents, or the pastor at our church growing up.

As Christians, we came to know Jesus through the stories in the Bible. As our faith grew, we may have attended a Bible study, read Christian books, or listened to faith based podcasts or radio programs. Almost all of them, I’m guessing, shared a story in one form or another.

God wants us to share our story. The Bible couldn’t be more clear! Yet many Christians get stuck. They don’t know how to write their testimony. Some Christian writers start worrying about whether their story is “good enough.”

Thankfully, writing and storytelling is a skill you can learn. As you practice, your confidence will grow.

It also helps to identify your natural storytelling abilities. That’s why I developed the “Quiz: What’s your Storytelling Style?” I wanted to help Christian writers overcome the barriers and doubts that can stop you from writing your story before you ever put pen to paper!

Discover your God-given storytelling strengths

In my experience, Christian writers are either Story Builders or Story Carvers. They either start with too little information and need to “build” their story. Or they start with too much and need to “carve” their story.

  • Story Builders start with a blank page or a few sentences. They construct their story from the ground up, piece by piece. Unfortunately, many Story Builders doubt themselves or their story as worthy, even though we know all faith stories can honor God!

Story Builders approach a story as a sculptor would approach clay: Adding to it in layers, first in big pieces and then in smaller and smaller pieces as they refine their story.

  • Story Carvers start with a mountain of material and have to carve chunks away. Many Story Carvers have journals, notes, research, photographs, and more to pull from, which can feel overwhelming.

Story Carvers are unsure how to develop a main point, or Story Anchor, to focus their story. Story Carvers understand their story can benefit many people, and at the same time they feel their story is a burden.

Are you a Story Builder or Story Carver? Take my storytelling quiz to discover your natural approach to faith storytelling. Then start working with your natural abilities!

You’ll also receive recommendations on what writing tools and approaches to use to help you get started.
